Clinical Evaluation of Nizatidine in Acute Gastritis and Acute Aggravation of Chronic Gastritis

Abstract
Nizatidine, a histamine H2-blocker, has a potent suppressive effect on gastric acid. It has an excellent efficacy in the treatment of peptic ulcers and reflux esophagitis. This benefit is widely confirmed in clinical settings.
To confirm the clinical efficacy of nizatidine for acute gastritis and acute aggravation of chronic gastritis, a open-label comparative study was undertaken with cimetidine, and H2-blocker which is also effective for the disease as a control drug.
In a total of 30 patients enrolled in this study, 15 patients were assigned to the nizatidine group and other 15 patients to the cimetidine group at the internal medicine ward of Kosin Medical Center from May, 1994 through July, 1995.
The result is given as follows.
1. Endoscopic examination found erosion in 25 patients(83.3%), congestion in 21(70.0%), edema in 11(36.7%) and hemorrhage in 4(13.3%). No differences in sites of lesions were found between the two groups.
2. The symptoms of the subjects disappeared rapidly, and no significant difference was found between the study and control groups.
3. The groups showed that an identical healing rate was 93.3% in nizatidine group and 86.7% in cimetidine group on the endoscopic findings conducted two weeks later.
4. No specific adverse reactions were observed in both groups.
This results given above indicate the efficacy of nizatidine is equal to that of cimetidine, making it a relatively safe drug for a short-term treatment at two weeks.
